In 2009 the Ecologist Magazine nominated Ann Pettifor as a “Visionary” – for her work on the ‘Green New Deal’. Later, in September 2009 the Times described her as “a member of that select club, the seers who saw it all coming.”
Ann writes and delivers speeches on international finance, sovereign debt and macroeconomics.
She has a distinguished record in the field of public advocacy, for which she was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2000 by Vice-chancellor Chris Patten of the University of Newcastle; the freedom of the City of Callao in Peru in 1999, an honorary Masters degree from the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Pax Christi International Peace Prize in 2000. In 2001 President Obasanjo of Nigeria honoured her as a Member of the Order of the Niger.
Britain’s Independent newspaper described her as ‘the genius’ behind the Jubilee 2000 campaign – which led to the cancellation of approximately $100 billion of debt owed by more than 40 countries.
In 2001, at the end of the Jubilee 2000 campaign, Ann became director of International Finance at the new economics foundation (nef) – a London-based think-tank. For three years she immersed herself in research into the international financial system . This led to a book she edited in 2003: “The Real World Economic Outlook” (Palgrave 2003) which accurately predicted “a seismic crisis” – the bursting of the credit bubble “in America, not Argentina”. In 2006 she authored her book ‘The coming first world debt crisis’ (Palgrave 2006) in which she spelled out the causes, nature and extent of the threat facing the global financial system.
Under Ann’s leadership Advocacy International has advised amongst others, the Global Fund for AIDS; the Queen of Jordan; the Gates Foundation; the former Nigerian Finance Minister, Dr.Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Dr Mansur Muhtar, then head of the Debt Management Office of Nigeria; the Childrens Defense Fund, the Global AIDs Alliance and the British churches climate change campaign “Operation Noah”.
